Is There Value in an SRD Controller Upgrade?

A controller upgrade represents a step forward, often times multiple steps forward.

Integration from an analog or basic digital controller to a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) represents a significant lead in technology. Specific features of the PLC address the demands of high-volume, high-precision manufacturing:

1. Reliability and Maintenance

Because the SRD is used more frequently than almost any other tool in the fab, downtime is incredibly expensive. The shift to a PLC-based system simplifies tool maintenance:

  • Standardized Parts: Utilizing industry-standard components that are easier to source and replace than proprietary custom designed controllers make PLCs the top option.

  • Software Flexibility: Logic updates can be pushed via software rather than rewiring hardware.

  • Safety Interlocks: Modern HMIs provide clearer status indicators for safety interlocks (Door Seal, N2 and Heating components), protecting both the operator and wafers.

2. Data Integrity & Lot Traceability

In industries like semiconductors or medical device manufacturing, knowing exactly what happened to a specific wafer or lot is indispensable

  • Real-Time Lot Traceability: By integrating a barcode scanner, each lot can be scanned prior to processing. The logged information helps identify responsible operator, recipe information and process or equipment alarms, allowing eyes on the process at all times.

  • Exportable Logs: PLC data allows for recipe, alarm, and operation log export, further providing your quality department with the "paper trail" needed for audits or failure analysis.

3. Troubleshooting

Downtime is the most expensive variable in production, therefore "Mean Time to Repair" (MTTR) is critical.

  • One-Touch I/O Diagnostics: PLCs can provide state of inputs and outputs (valves, motors, switches) directly from the I/O screens with the touch of the HMI screen.

  • Instant Alarm Notification: Precise alarm descriptions allow for immediate corrective action rather than vague "System Error" codes.

4. Sustainability & Cost Control

  • User Selectable N2 Economizer: Nitrogen is a significant utility cost. Depending on your need, a PLC-controlled system can reduce or even turn off N2 flow during idle times without compromising the inert environment, directly lowering the cost of ownership.

5. Security & Process Control

  • Advanced Security: Multi-level password protection options which can permit operators to run a process, but provide a engineering capabilities to modify recipe parameters. This prevents "unauthorized optimizations" that can lead to yield loss. Control at your discretion is key.

6.Operational Efficiency & Ease of Use

Modern manufacturing requires rapid onboarding and minimal operator error. The PLC interface with HMI with Intuitive Touchscreens will simplify intricate processes into visual cues.

  • Large, easy to view screen: Since operators need to catch critical values and alarms quickly, the HMI screen size, layout and high resolutions graphics are a vast improvement over smaller digital keypads of other controller options.

  • Easy Setup and Navigation: Reduces time for new process implementations and use of a single quick touch menu bar for quick access to data.

  • Status Lights:  PLC driven systems that provide immediate "at-a-glance" floor management, allow management to monitor tool productivity from across the cleanroom.

By upgrading from a fixed platform to a flexible programmable logic environment, the SRD becomes an adaptable asset that can be updated as your process requirements evolve, rather than becoming obsolete when new manufacturing standards arise. These transitions can be invaluable.

M Tek continues to manufacture and support PSC102 and PSC101 controller models. The advanced features in our new MT20 PLC with HMI Touch Screen Controller (designed for our new TS model SRDs) are now available as an UPGRADE OPTION for customers with SRDs currently in their fab.
